Btw my Ramadaan is going well ... its nice to listen to Taraweeh, at night on Saudi Tv, i turn it on and hear the Imam e Kabah recite Quran and supplicate at the end of the Taraweeh and sometimes i join in by praying Salaah together . I know its not with Jamaat but it feels lovely. you almost feel like your praying inside Haram :)...

Will you tell the patient the true diagnosis?
Will you tell her a lie, thinking you can at least make her last few days comfortable?

I hesitated for a while to do this since I no longer write those long, painstakingly crafted reviews which require arduous memorization during the film itself. My career ambitions have changed drastically in the past few months. Consider this more of a casual review, or even a rave. You know how in TV previews every single critic on the face of the earth is depicted as "raving" about the film because of generally mild and often completely out of context positive one-or-two-word phrases from their reviews That has always struck me as being as funny as it is annoying since as far as I know to "rave" means "to rant insanely". Well, if there has been a film that I've seen in the past year or so worth genuinely raving about, it is Inception. (Bear in mind that it's probably been weeks since I've seen it, so it isn't exactly fresh in my memory.) I understand that I am far from alone in this opinion. The very fact that Leonardo DiCaprio, the man every other man despises supposedly for being a bad actor (he's not) but really because they're jealous of him, has actually not been lambasted mercilessly for his performance by every heterosexual male on the face of the planet, itself automatically proves that Inception gives us so much to love that we don't even notice his presence or have time for bashing it.

DiCaprio plays a man by the odd name of Dom Cobb, which you would expect to be the name of a W.C. Fields or Hee Haw character instead. Cobb is an expert at getting into your dreams and learning your secrets from them since he knows the language of dream symbolism and the science of how dreams work. He does this for a price, and it is an illegal job that he does in the underground with his partner Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). One day a powerful client (Ken Watanabe) comes to him with a proposal that he can get Dom's charges cleared if he'll help him perform the ultimate dream crime: the implantation, or inception, of an idea within the head of a business associate (Cilian Murphy). It seems to be the only way of stopping the man from creating a dangerous energy monopoly.

This begins the fascinating central passage of the film, in which the logic of how the tricks are done with this dream technology is carefully laid out and explained. The audience avatar for the unknowing party being introduced to it all is Ariadne (Ellen Page), who is being recruited to be their dream architect to manipulate Murphy's dreams so they can get to the lowest level of his sunconscious and get their inception in. To see how they plan to do this is wonderous, interesting, and (to me) surprising. The best part of it all is the dream tutorials Cobb gives Ariadne, in which he goes inside dreams with her and shows her how it all works in the most awesome-in-both-senses-of-the-word uses of special effects that I have seen in perhaps any film since 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I can't explain too much about the film's third act, in which the inception mission is undertaken, without venturing somewhat into Spoilerland. I can say that it provides rare instances of special effects existing because of action instead of it being the other way around. Indeed, it's hard to think of a single scene in the film in which special effects not only don't have an excuse but also are not an essential part of the plot. Nor is the action wanting, nor poured on too thick and frequent in the third act. There are no truly bad performances. Even throwaway roles by Michael Caine and Pete Postelthwaite (sp?) are scene stealers, which I suppose we should only expect of those two. The soundtrack is always appropriate to the scene. The story is almost never predictable. (There's an entire subplot I dare not even tell you about.) Complaints do not come easily for me when it comes to this film (and I may have forgotten little flawed moments since I saw it) but I suppose I do have two. First, with all the explanations for the dream-penetrating itself, it would have been nice to have even the briefest and most purely pseudo-scientific explanation for the actual technology which provides it, but there are none. Second, if you apply enough logic to the closing shot, it kind of unravels it. And I had to think about it just to come up with those.

Inception is a film both for people who go into it expecting and wanting pure, emotional, sensational Hollywood entertainment and those who go into it crossing their fingers and praying that it will be no such thing. How many movies can ever accomplish that?

In a past thread I linked you to a site where you can play Intellivision games online with no strings attached. The problem is, as useful as that website can be, the site through which you access it was down the last couple of times I tried it (though it's working fine now, and the direct link I gave you may help in any case), you have to be connected to the internet to reach it as with any site, and there's a very limited selection with maybe only two or three real gems. In my further searches I have found a place where you can get three quick and easy downloads (for either Mac or PC) which contain game paks that, all combined, comprise ten games. (For some odd reason "Minotaur" isn't listed at that link with the other games even though it's included in the third pak. Maybe it's the video game equivalent of a hidden bonus track?)

The first pak contains the classic arcade-style game "Astrosmash"; along with "Utopia", which is sort of a proto-"Sim City"; and "Skiing", which is different from the Atari 2600 game, with more realistic movement and therefore more challenge.

The second pak has "Nightstalker", one of the most awesome games ever. You've got a giant spider, you've got laser-shooting robots, you've got bats, webs, a dark labyrinth...and the most pleasing sound effects of any really old game. The pak also contains "Space Spartans" and "Deep Pockets: Super Pro Pool & Billiards", which is quite an oddity of a redundant title. I thought pool and billiards were the same thing...?

The third pak has "Beauty and the Beast", which has nothing to do with the fairy tale. Instead, it's sort of an amalgam of "Donkey Kong" and "Popeye", and fittingly it's as good as both of them combined. I could play it for hours. Then there's "Minotaur", a decent enough maze-oriented turn-based RPG game (though turn-based RPG's aren't really my cup of tea, the only one I was ever fanatical about being the computer game "Alternate Reality: The City"). And "B-17 Bomber", the game that will leave you scratching your head, trying desperately to figure out how to play it (believe me, the manual they include is no help), and "Shark Shark", one of the all time greats, a game that is somehow exciting and relaxing at once. You're in the sea, eating smaller fish to get larger while avoiding those bigger than you, and avoiding sharks, jellyfish, and other hazards of the deep.

The downloads take no time at all. There are larger free dowloadable collections of Intellivision games out there that you don't need to trust some total stranger with your credit card number to get to, but none that contain "Beauty and the Beast", "Astrosmash", and "Nightstalker".

And if that's not your cup of retro tea, there's still Atarimania and Plug N' Play. But I thought I should share the Intellipak info with you.
